By the time i had managed to get around to everyone it was time for the BBQ and social part of the whole event with everyone winding in for the evening we all made our way round to the marquee for a famous Adam Lowbridge BBQ. We wont forget Ben and Gary here who were both preparing meat Friday evening at home whilst the rest of us were sat on our arses enjoying ourselves. Well done lads! BBQ was a great success and whoever invited the entertainment (Al Sharp) is a winner! I returned again on the final day to learn that Team George Fenner and Josh Lowe had another fish during the night from Poachers Pool at the weight of 35lb which currently stands as a Poachers Pool record. The young lads were almost certain they were now in the lead and winning the match but we was all to learn that Team Tom Baker and Jack Smith had also caught during the night. Jack managed to land a personal best of 36lb 12oz keeping them in the lead until the match ended. The news was broken savagely to George and Josh as you can imagine. During the event we held a raffle to win some great prizes donated to us by some great local businesses Fenland Fisheries, Holme Fen Fishery and Sheltons Tackle Peterborough.

Not too many years ago angling was the biggest participant sport in the UK, although hard to believe more people went fishing than paid to watch a football match. Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewell made similar statements during her visit to the refuge earlier this week. Photos of the refuge shared by federal officials show that the ranchers left a mess inside the building. The compound is undergoing a giant spring cleaning, with the use of industrial vacuums and cargo trailers filled with cleaning supplies. Repairing damage and removing debris is expected to take until early summer. In all, the standoff will cost Fish and Wildlife about $6 million, with about $2 million spent during the takeover, including the costs of moving the refuge’s 17 employees out of town for safety to live at government expense in hotels for weeks, Ashe said. Fish biologist Linda Beck said she’s glad to be back at work, but the biggest cost of the standoff was missed work. Beck and a team of biologists were planning to remove invasive carp by commercial fishing because the fish consume habitat needed by birds.

Just a few short years ago fishing was the most popular sport here in the UK, in fact more people went fishing than watched football matches. However, I dont like anti-social or anti-fellow-angler behaviour and as far as I was concerned setting up in the manner these guys did was just that! Some good anglers, guys I know have thrown most of their lives behind promoting the sport and helping newcomers any time they can, have recently had a right bashing on Facebook. Luckily they are hard skinned and have shrugged it off others might not be so resilient to this heartless behaviour. Weights of fish on social media Why attack someone because he is a carp angler, matchman or successful big fish hunter? Ive sometimes questioned the weights or places of capture of some fish that had been shunted onto social media but Ive done it in private, with my mates. I cant prove that any of the details of these captures were wrong fish can look a totally different weight in pictures so I wont give a public opinion. If someone has lied about a weight or venue they are only really fooling themselves. They know they didnt catch what they claim for where they claimed. Angling should be using the power of social media to spread good stuff about our sport, to help and encourage others, to pass on important information. In Ireland they have set up a poaching-watch Facebook page where they name and shame people who kill fish against the rules.
After a brief discussion with Jake and Dan on the first morning we thought it practical to deploy Mark Bartlett into our peg on C section, due to England being at a massive disadvantage on having to find the extra range. Make no mistake, Jake and Dan were fishing and baiting effectively at 140m. But being so far back in the bay they were at a massive disadvantage to the rest of the section. Mark Bartlett is the best caster in the team and in the right conditions can fish effectively at 175m plus. So on moving into the swim he made almost an instant impact by catching the pair another fish at massive range. At the late afternoon scores at around the 30 hours point England had slipped to 5th as more teams managed to catch a fish in each section, with Croatia catching well on all pegs and now starting to run away with the event on only 6 penalty points. By late afternoon on day two England had managed to recapture 4th in front of Italy. With less than 24 hours of the match remaining Russia climbed the leader board and had passed England and Italy into 4th place. The last night changed things again, not for the first three places but for England and Italy who had both gone past Russia by the morning results with Italy again in 4th and England in 5th place. With 2 hours to go the news was passed onto the England pair in C section that they only needed one decent fish in the 5kg region for England to go past Italy and re-capture 4th spot. At this point Mark Bartlett advised that his wife had gone into labour back home and was it all right for him to be substituted so he could leave the event as he could get a flight back. Later mark confirmed a new addition to his family a baby girl of 6lb 10oz and we wish him all the very best. Back at the match the substitution had taken place with Pete Holehouse being dusted down and shipped into the peg. Mark together with Jake had had a great match lifting this unfancied peg from no-where to 5th position in C section. With about an hour remaining one of the rods burst into life and Jake duly landed the 5.5kg fish to secure England in 4th place clear by a two point margin over 5th place Italy. Congratulations to Croatia who fished a perfect match to maintain their well-deserved first place with a near perfect 4 penalty points.
The city received a $500,000 grant last year from the state Recreation and Conservation Office to help pay for the new dock. The council last year approved a 2016 budget adjustment proposed by Mayor Suzette Cooke that will fund the remaining $1.2 million from 2008 bond proceeds originally intended to build a new East Hill maintenance facility that city officials later abandoned. Its very old, city parks planner Hope Gibson told the council committee about the dock built by King County in the 1980s before the city annexed the area. We have had to restrict some of the use, for example, we no longer allow people to stand on it during (Fourth of July Splash) fireworks because we dont want it to carry that kind of a load. So far, weve been lucky it hasnt sunk or had any issues. Several floats on the dock are listing and some of the pilings anchoring the floats are loose, according to city parks staff. The council approved a $197,660 contract with Everett-based Reid Middleton, Inc., an engineering firm, to design the new dock. Construction is scheduled to start after Labor Day weekend following the busy summer swimming season at the park. The dock will go in the same spot as the existing dock. The swim beach had about 100,000 visitors last summer between Fathers Day and Labor Day, Watling said. New field at Hogan Park The city will spend about $1.9 million to convert the main field at Hogan Park at Russell Road to synthetic turf from grass in order to get year round use out of the field. We look to maximize complexes, and these fields were built in the 1970s, Watling said. Field one is about 3.5 acres and we will convert it to synthetic turf. Now used only for baseball and softball, the new field will also be marked for soccer and lacrosse. The new turf will allow baseball and softball in the fall and winter as well. The plan is to use the multi-sport field 12 months a year. Hogan Park field has lights, but those lights may need to be upgraded after the design work because the lights were set up for the one baseball field and not for multipurpose use, Gibson said. The city annually draws numerous baseball and softball tournaments to Hogan Park.

The following morning at first light, I witnessed a few carp show over the baited area, and at 7am received a take, I managed to get the fish to kite out of the bay in open water, then after a minute or two, had it close in, but was nowhere near finished and charged into the marginal branches to my left, I kept the rod tip under the water, until I felt the fish had come free, then it swung to my right, charging into the bay and trying to make for the weedbed, but I managed to keep it from reaching the thick weedbed in the middle, after a few more minutes, we finally slipped the net under a nice dark fish, which was a fish called Scully weighing 37.02bs, its downfall being a snowman rig, comprised 15mm crave bottom bait, and 10mm crave popup boilie, tied to size 8 mcs hook, 6 15lb coated braid rig. During the day I spotted a few carp coming and going, and so baited up again with another 8 spombs of bait. The following morning was very quiet all around the lake, and I didnt see too much in front of me. I went for a walk to see if I could find anything, but I could not, so i decided to stay put, as the weather looked good for this area. The wind was picking up again, pressure as dropping fa st, with a little rain forecast. As I had not seen a lot over the area, I topped it up with 4 spombs of bait just after midday. Mid-afternoon I saw a bit of bubbling over the area ,then a carp boiled close by, I had a little occurrencearound 5pm with a couple of bleeps, then another fish rolled close by again. At just after 7pm, the same alarm as before shrieked for my attention, the fish hit the surface a few seconds later and powered off the weed bed at the back of the clearing, I managed to turn the fish into open water, but not for long, before it turned 180 degrees and shot straight into the thickest weedbed. Kept pumping slowly, and could just see a weedbed coming towards me slowly, there was no movement, and I thought the fish had shed the hook, but as the weedbed slowly drifted into my feet, I could see a big grey lump in the middle of it, a quickly dropped my rod, and grabbed my net and scooped everything up, just as the fish realised what was going on, and thrashed about in the net, soaking me in the process. On the scales I read 43.08lbs, a fish called Uno.
The 3rd Thames TideFest Angling Championship will extend upstream to Ham, an area renowned for big bags of dace and bream, in addition to the existing sections at Strand on the Green at Kew and downstream at Barnes. The prestigious event, organised by the Angling Trust and Thames Water, will be held on Sunday, September 11th, 2016 on the tidal Thames in London. With just 20 pegs in each zone, anglers will have a lot more room between pegs in 2016 making for a quality Thames fishing match in an environment where match fishing is rarely seen, unlike the heady days in the 1970s and 80s. As well as the pools payouts the competitors will share 1,000 in prize money, split over the three zones, thanks to sponsorship from Thames Tideway Tunnel and Thames Water. Bream feature strongly Despite bright sunny conditions and low flows the river fished well in this years match and bream to 7lbs showed throughout, together with some huge dace at Strand on the Green and some quality roach at Barnes. Andriks Lekstutis took first place with 31lb 13ozsof slabs from just below Kew railway bridge at Strand on the Green while Tackle Up proprietor Nigel Newport from Fleet in Hampshire recorded the top weight at Barnes of 21lb 8oz. Keith Arthur lands a bream during the 2015 Tidefest match. Angling journalist and Thames regular Keith Arthur said: I am delighted to hear that plans are in hand for an even bigger and better event next year, bringing a section of semi-tidal Thames at Ham into the match and with it lots more activities on the ample grassland next to the river. The way the river has fished this year, 2016 should be even better. One of the big surprises for me was the appearance of some serious roach on the downstream section at Barnes.
I drew Red Kite and had a good day winning it with 47lb+ of F1’s only winning by a small margin to Gary Thorpe with 46lb. The match that got me going was on Sunday the 5th round of the East Midlands Winter League fished on Ravenley, Whittlesey and Factory Bank all small drains. The drain you needed to draw to win the match was Factory Bank but I drew Ravenley. This drain was full of small fish and all I could do was try and win my section as all the pegs at Factory Bank are good for 10lb+. I did have a method though for Ravenley and that was to fish for Bleak as I thought if I had a good match I could catch upwards of 1,000 Bleak! Yes one thousand Bleak 200+ an hour was on the cards if they kept coming for the length of the match which equates to 4 Bleak a minute or one every 15 seconds. I’ve started using the new Shimano Super Ultegra whips , they are available as a set of five whips (2m, 2.5m, 3m, 3.5m, 4m) offering fantastic value for money, on the day I decided to set up the 3.5m version. I used an 0.14mm main line to an 0.08mm hook length of Aspire Silk Shock to a Kamasan B511 size 18 with the barb pinched down for speed. I fed 1 pint of Fluro Pinkies throughout the match and used a new MP1 4×10 fished at 18″ to 30″ deep to a small bulk of no10 Stotz.
The floating bait helps hold up your hook giving the offering a very tempting slow fall through the water. Fluoro pinkies in singles or doubles can often catch when all else fails. Its worth getting some specialist bait dyes to make them even more vividly coloured. They really are a bait you have to try. Groundbait isnt always the kiss of death you might expect it to be in the cold weather. But unlike your hookbaits it is worth using a darker feed rather than light. The dark colour means fish are keener to feed over it that a light bait over which they would stand out to predators like perch and pike. Riddle out the lumps that could feed fish up very quickly. The natural instinct in winter is to use smaller baits in a bid to tempt reluctant fish. You could be surprised how a change to bigger baits (on bigger hooks of course) can pull a bite when all else has failed. Again, I think it is the greed factor that you bring out in the fish. Autumn reeds they might be going brown but dont you be green.
I also thread the shock leader through a 15-20 length of rig tubing which not only helps protect the line from abrasion but also serves to stiffen the line and help eliminate any tangles. Heres my preferred set up for heavy duty spodding / Spombing (6-10 oz) : A dedicated 4.5 5lb test curve 12 Spod/Spomb rod such as a Century NG, Free Spirit or heavy duty Surf Rod. This should be matched with a large spool reel (mine is a well worn Diawa Emblem Pro 5000) loaded with 250-300 yds of 50lb braid. This covers 90% of most needs up to around 100yds. If you really need to cast further then I would consider 30lb braid mainline but only when used with with a 50lb braid shock leader with no less than 4-5 turns around the spool. Lighter 3.00 4.00 test curve rods & reels can cope with smaller Spod/Spomb loads but always be sure to err on the side of safety by testing it filled to half capacity rather than going all out and risk breaking the rod. Getting it Back One drawback of the Spomb is that it floatsbut only just! This can lead to frustration when trying to recover one that has broken off. A simple solution is to grab a few of the polystyrene bobbers (I like the Thill versions) that are available in most tackle shops here in North America. It doesnt take more than a couple of minutes to remove the line clip and plastic center and if necessary open up the hole so that it slides securely ( a drop of super glue can be used) over the connecting sleeve on the Spomb. You now not only have a Spomb that should float nicely if it breaks off but if you chose a bright neon bobber it will also serve as a convenient marker. Save yourself!
